After the loss of my daughter Dawn in 2001 to a hit and run driver, I was fortunate to learn about the MISS Foundation which has helped reshape my life. The MISS Foundation's Kindness Walk: We Walk for Them  is an international memorial walk to remember all of the beloved children who are gone too soon, and to honor all of the mothers, fathers, families and communities by participating in Kindness Projects as a way to continue their child's legacy.

The MISS Foundation's international community invites you and your loved ones to participate in our Kindness Walk: We Walk for Them  because death is NOT bigger than a family's love, and because even in their absence, they continue to walk with us, as we walk for them.

This event's Kindness Project is called Beautiful Soles, and will take place at the conclusion of the walk. Here, families will donate new or gently used shoes, and adorn the shoes with a legacy message in honor of their beloved child. The Beautiful Soles will then be donated to local organizations that serve

Three friends married women from different parts of the country.....

The first man married a woman from  Utah  . He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man married a woman from  California  . He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man married a girl from  Chicago  . He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees.

July 17, 1997: F. W. Woolworth Company closes. The first Woolworth store opened in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1879. Frank Winfield Woolworth began his chain with a $300 loan, about $9,750 in 2011 dollars. Woolworth’s was one of the original five-and-dime stores. The store sold discounted merchandise at fixed prices – usually five or ten cents. These prices were lower than other local merchants. The merchandise was set out for the customer to handle without aid from a sales clerk. Before this time, most merchandise was kept behind a counter and a clerk would gather your purchases together for you to buy.

Woolworth’s first attempt at marketing was made in Utica, New York in 1878. It failed. After the successful opening of the store in Pennsylvania, Woolworth brought his brother into the business. Frank and Charles worked together and opened more stores, often in partnership with outsiders. Sometimes, the brothers went into partnership with “friendly rivals” to maximize their combined purchasing power. The Woolworth brothers had a flagship store in Philadelphia.

The success of these stores was phenomenal. In 1910, Frank Woolworth commissioned the construction of the Woolworth Building in New York City. The building was completed in 1913 and was the tallest building in the world until 1930. Woolworth paid for the building in cash. This building served as the company’s headquarters until its demise. The building was sold by Woolworth Company’s successor, the Venator Group in 1998.

In 1924, the brothers were operating six different chains of stores in the US and Canada. Rather than continue in this manner, they brought all 596 stores together under one banner and incorporated the F. W. Woolworth Co. Eventually, the stores began to also include lunch counters after they proved to be successful in England. The concept of a low price store was copied by many but for many years, Woolworth held market share. The stores often stood as anchors stores in shopping centers and malls. These large stores drove many local merchants out of business.

In the 1960s, Woolworth’s became the victim of a new trend as even larger discount stores came into being. In 1962, Woolco was founded. This was the same year S.S. Kresge Company opened K-Mart, Dayton’s opened Target, and Sam Walton opened his first Wal-Mart. By its 100^th anniversary in 1979 the Woolworth chain was the largest department store chain in the world. The competition became too much and sales dropped. In 1983 Woolco closed and by 1993, the entire company underwent a restructuring. On this date, Woolworth closed its remaining stores and changed its name to Venetor which then changed to Foot Locker, Inc. There are still Woolworth named stores outside the US.

Each day around the world, parents walk their babies, safely nestled in their strollers, around parks, neighborhoods, schools and even zoos. Each day around the world, parents hear the steps of their children come through the door at the end of their school day. Each day around the world, parents experience their children's feet returning home for family gatherings and holidays.

But, tragically..., not all children get to ride in their strollers, return home at the end of the school day, or spend time with family.

The Kindness Walk is an International memorial walk to remember all the mothers, fathers, and families-and their beloved children-and to honor those relationships on the most sacred of days for families; Mother's Day.

James (Jiggs) Kovin RIP

Well it never gets any easier even as we are all "grown up"  Its been Two years sinceI lost my Pal   James "Jiggs" Kovin. I use the term Pal because thats how my friend always referred to me as his Pal.My man Jiggs brought back that word Pal out of retirement and made it a word of value again We we met almost 10 years ago to the date I knew this was a good man, He was my friend, my mentor also as he always said he was my anger management guru....And he was  lol...When ever he would walk into the house he would always greet me the same   "Hows my man pots and pans...It became are regular saying along with some of the other nicknames he came up for me along with the crazy eyetie...We spent 9 great years together and building ourselfs quite a group of friends along the way.All of who always smiled when he came in the room.In life you get to meet a very few people like Jiggs and I realized what a great addition to my life he had become.My man you will never be forgotten as you were my PAL and loved you very much. Now my pal its time for you to rest and know you left a mark on the people that you have touched along the way even more than you could have ever figured.So rest in peace my friend and thank you for being you.....................Love always....... your man pots and pans

Portillo's ? Can't Wait !!!

Transplanted Chicagoans were downright giddy Tuesday at the news that Portillo’s Hot Dogs is looking to expand its restaurant chain to the Phoenix area.

Portillo’s is an icon in Chicagoland, loved and remembered by the tens of thousands of local residents who moved out of Illinois over the years to make Arizona their home.

You can include me in that bunch. I grew up eating the scrumptious Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches at the local Portillo’s just a few minutes away from where my parents still live in Naperville, Ill. And yes, I went to Portillo’s for lunch when I was back to visit for Christmas. That’s just what you do when you “go back.”

Portillo’s is looking to build new restaurants at Tempe Marketplace, Chandler Fashion Center and other locations in Phoenix or Scottsdale.

When word spread of the news yesterday, I received a handful of emails and Facebook messages about the news. Al Maag, chief communications officer at Phoenix-based Avnet Inc.    , is a Chicago native. He said one of the reasons he loves the Phoenix area is because there are so many Chicagoans here.

“I feel it’s the western suburbs of Chicago without the snow and traffic congestion,” he said.
Maag said there are thousands of hot dog stands in Chicago, but Portillo’s stands out.

“When I travel back to Chicago my first stop is Portillo’s for a beef sandwich and hot dog,” he said. “Heck, my family and I have it shipped here four times a year for special parties. I remember when In-N-Out came here the lines were pretty long. When Portillo’s comes it will be a happening of a higher magnitude. My guess is the last car will be in Tucson.”

Stephanie Lough, an account coordinator at HMA Public Relations    in Phoenix, didn’t grow up in the Chicago area, but she’s been bitten by the Portillo’s bug.
