Trauma and Grief


Is there a difference between trauma and grief? In fact, there is. Many people that are suddenly stricken with grief do not know the fundamental differences between trauma and grief, but is it crucial that the two be easily recognizable in order to avoid any serious occurrence.

Trauma requires immediately professional attention, whereas grief is a normal part of any healing process. One that feels sad following a loss is certainly dealing with grief, but one that feels terrified may be confronting trauma. Those that are going through the effects of trauma will find it very difficult, if not impossible, to talk about death, and they are often afraid of loss and danger. When one experience trauma, the feelings and fears do not subside with time, which is the exact opposite of grief.

If you suspect that someone you know is dealing with trauma following a loss, you will want to seek medical help immediately. Trauma can often lead to physical harm, violence, and even health problems, so make sure that trauma is not left lingering. The real way to tell the difference between trauma and grief is to note that trauma is far more extreme than grief is. Understanding the differentiation between trauma and grief can really help to save someone’s life should you recognize the symptoms immediately.
